Space Weather Effects on Communications

چکیده
An overview of historical and contemporary impacts of the solar and geospace environments on communications systems. Abstract In the last century and one-half, since the invention and deployment of the first electrical communication system – the electrical telegraph, the variety of communications technologies that can be affected by natural processes occurring on the Sun and in the space environment around Earth have vastly increased. This chapter presents some of the history of the subject o f " s p a c e we a t h e r " a s it affects communications systems, beginning wi t h t h e e a r l i e s t e l e c t r i c t e l e g r a p h s y s t e ms a n d c o n t i n u i n g t o t o d a y ' s wi r e l e s s communications using satellites and land links. An overview is presented of the present-day communications technologies that can be affected by solar-terrestrial phenomena such as solar and galactic charged particles, solar-produced plasmas, and geomagnetic disturbance s i n t h e E a r t h ' s ma g n e t o s p h e r e a n d i o n o s p h e r e .

Real time monitoring for nowcasting and forecasting ionospheric space weather in Europe with ground digisondes
The Earth’s ionosphere largely determines space weather effects on radio wave communications, navigation and surveillance systems. Lately there has been an increasing demand for ionospheric nowcast and accurate forecast services by various groups of users, including European industry. The paper reviews research activities in Europe based on the exploitation of real-time ground digisondes for th...
متن کاملCost and Performance Comparison of an Earth-Orbiting Optical Communication Relay Transceiver and a Ground-Based Optical Receiver Subnet
Optical communications can provide high-data-rate telemetry from deep-space probes with subsystems that have lower mass, consume less power, and are smaller than their radio frequency (RF) counterparts. However, because optical communication is more affected by weather than is RF communication, it requires groundstation site diversity to mitigate the adverse effects of inclement weather on the ...
متن کاملExperiments of the Space Weather Network Using JGN2
The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) operates a Japanese space forecast center for the International Space Environment Service (ISES). Information on space weather is exchanged daily among the space weather forecast centers all over the world. Researches of space weather need data on large areas of space from the Sun to the Earth’s upper atmosphere. It is n...
متن کاملSpace Weather and Satellite Communications: an Useful Synergybetween Geophysicists and Engineers
This work discusses space weather effects on satellite communications. After presenting trends in mobile satellite communications and signal processing, impacts of space weather are analysed. The article also points out that a partnership between geophysicists and engineers is useful for both physical analysis and management of space weather effects, such as scintillations in satellite/GPS syst...
متن کاملSpace Weather Support for Communications
Ionospheric variability (space weather) significantly impacts ground and space-based communications. In essence, the electrically charged particles of the ionosphere (i.e., the partially ionized portion of the atmosphere starting at about 40 nautical miles (nm) above the Earth's surface) can attenuate, totally absorb, reflect, change direction of propagation, and change the phase and amplitude ...
متن کاملSpace Weather and Real-Time Monitoring
Recent advance of information and communications technology enables to collect a large amount of ground-based and space-based observation data in real-time. The real-time data realize nowcast of space weather. This paper reports a history of space weather by the International Space Environment Service (ISES) in association with the International Geophysical Year (IGY) and importance of real-tim...
